Artist Soomin Bae presents “Time Tower,” which focuses on the mobility and temporality of the prison site. In this space composed of purely functional design without any aesthetic consideration, there are numerous doors in every passageway as if depriving freedom. Not only are the prison cells uniformly lined up but every passageway corner leading anywhere passes through several layers of different iron bars.
“Time Tower” captures the images of numerous iron bars in the prison and places them in a virtual space as a steel tower, higher than the watchtower, containing the time that flows differently for each inmate. Bae completed “Time Tower,” capturing the weight of punishment as a being that cannot be avoided or overcome, higher than the symbolic watchtowers and prison walls. This provides the opportunity for reflection on one’s attitude toward life by re-discovering one’s autonomy in their own time through free will.

Artist's Note

Currently, due to prison relocation, the scenery of the prison overgrown with weeds gave the impression that time had stopped, far out of touch with the outside world. Suddenly, I wondered if there was anything more appropriate as “punishment” for the guilty in the general sense than the flow of time, which seemed to have stopped, that those imprisoned may have felt regarding their unscheduled release date, along with the sense of duress presented by the iron doors that restricted freedom within the prison.
