어렸을 적 아버지를 따라 몇 번 방문 경험이 있던 교도소는 친근하게 대해주는 사람들로 인해 무섭다기 보다는 지인 만나러 놀러갔던 기억으로 자리 잡고 있었다. 그 당시 교도소에 대한 개념을 인지하지 못했던 때라 그랬을텐데 나이가 들면서 그곳이 교도소였다는 것, 그리고 교도소는 죄를 지은 사람들이 가는 곳이라고 인식을 하게 되었다.

2022년, 텅 비어버린 교도소를 방문했을 때 일반인이 출입할 수 없는 공간까지 돌아보며 약간 스산한 기운을 느꼈지만, 방문 회 차가 거듭될수록 아이러니 하게도 또 다른 삶의 장소로 보이기 시작했다. 마치 어렸을 적 느꼈던 장소의 기억이 되살아났다.

교도소는 그 사회의 통제 시스템이 극대화 되어 반영된 곳으로, 사회의 단면을 마주할 수 있다고 생각했다. 교정과 교화를 목적으로 여러 감시와 통제시스템이 배치되어 있지만, 이곳 또한 여러 입장의 사람이 살았던 장소이다. 목적성은 다르지만 사람이 사는 공간으로 인식하고 자화상을 배치함으로써 거울에 비친 사회로 이 장소를 들여다보고자 하였다.

Artist's Note

The prison, which I had visited several times with my father as a child, has remained in my memory as a place to visit and hang out with acquaintances rather than a scary place due to the friendly people. It must have been because I didn't understand the concept of prison at the time. However, as I got older, I came to realize that it was a prison and that prison is a place where criminals go.

When I visited the empty prison in 2022, I felt a little bleak as I looked back at the spaces that were not accessible to the general public. As the number of visits increased, ironically, the place began to appear as a different place of life. It brought back memories of the place I had experienced as a child.

As prison is a place that reflects a maximized system of societal control, I thought that I could face a singular sector of society. Although various monitoring and control systems are in place for the purpose of correction and re-education, this was also a place where people from various positions lived. I tried to view the prison as a society reflected in a mirror by recognizing it as a space where people lived, albeit for a different purpose, and by arranging self-portraits.
