오만, 그리고 편견에 대하여

광주교도소를 방문하기 전 나에게 감옥은 무섭고 나쁜 사람들이 가는 기피의 장소였다. 프로젝트를 시작하면서 광주교도소와 관련 이야기를 들으며 교도소라는 장소가 환기하는 이미지와 진실과의 괴리를 느낄 수 있었다. 시스템 속에서 살고 있는 내가 받은 교육과 노출된 미디어에 의한 결과일지 모른다. 요즘 사람들이 다른 사람들과 관계를 시작할 때 MBTI를 가지고 성향을 판단하여 대하는 것처럼 익명의 개인과 사회에서 만날 때 그 사람이 감옥에서 복역한 경험이 있다는 것을 알게 된다면 나는 어떠한 태도로 그를 대할 것인가? 광주교도소에 복역했던 사람들 중 다수는 5.18 민주 운동을 했던 사람들이라고 한다. 당시 교도소에서는 그 사람들을 다른 죄수들과 구분하지 않고 대했다고...

광주교도소를 방문하며 내리를 비를 피해 들어간 처마 밑에서 제인 오스틴의 < 오만과 편견 >을 발견한다. 내가 법 없이도 살 수 있는 인간이라고 생각했던 것은 오만이었다. 법은 사회 시스템에 의하여 언제든 바뀔 수 있는 것이고 나는 그들의 기준에 의하여 사회에서 용인되지 않는 사람이 될 수도 있을 것이다. 감옥이라는 장소가 혐오 시설이어서 동네에서 사라져야 한다는 주민들의 생각은 어쩌면 편견일지 모른다. 남겨진 광주교도소 건물과 부지는 무성하게 자라는 나무와 풀들만이 위로하는 아픈 기억의 장소였다.

광주교도소 내부를 걸으며 거대 사회 시스템의 틈새로 미끌어지며 비껴 흐르는 개인들의 삶의 방식과 마주한다. 개인들이 숨 쉴 작은 구멍들, 창들, 수감소 방에 벽에 붙어있는 꽃무늬 벽지들, “SWORD Of FURY”라는 제목의 판타지 소설, 그리고 바닥에 널려 있는 둥글레차 티백에서.

About Pride, and Prejudice

Before visiting Gwangju Prison, I viewed prison as a place to be avoided, filled with bad and scary people. When I started the project, I listened to the stories of Gwangju Prison and saw the gap between stereotype and reality. This may be a result of my education and the media, living in the system. People nowadays use MBTI to judge character when starting a relationship. If I met someone new, how would I treat them if I knew they had served time in prison? Many of those who served time in Gwangju Prison are said to have participated in the May 18 Democratization Movement. At that time, prison treated them no differently from other prisoners....

On my visit to Gwangju Prison, I discovered a copy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice stashed under the eaves, protected from rain. I was arrogant to think that I could live without the law. Laws can change at any time according to social systems, and if society’s standards changed, I too could end up on the wrong side: someone not accepted. Local residents’ view of prison as a hateful facility that should disappear from their neighborhood is based on prejudice. The buildings and grounds of Gwangju Prison that were left behind were a place of painful memories, comforted only by the overgrown trees and grass.

Walking inside Gwangju Prison, I came across the ways of life of the individuals there, who had slipped through the cracks of the broad social system: the small holes for people to breathe, window frames, floral wallpaper in prison rooms, a fantasy novel titled Sword of Fury, Solomon’s seal tea bags discarded on the floor.
