Kwon Hae-il’s  series examines the process of shaping cities and residential culture through digital photographs of apartment construction sites, evoking the surveillance and control methods of modern society and the spectacle of capitalism encroaching on society. Various photographic works are exhibited in Web VR at three points along the barrier between the roof of the prison’s welfare building and watchtower.

Once the shantytown on the hills was bulldozed, an apartment complex with a rich town’s name took the place. Out of the fear of losing a competition and despite the price premium for being close to a flashy neighborhood across the river, I ended up buying a unit. While this numbered rectangular space built on the air is legally mine, I am anxious. The concern of selling this property already gives me a headache, although I just bought it.
About five decades ago, Guy Debord has warned the world that it would be full of people just like me. He named the particular loss of inherent worth and the form of worshipping commodities as “spectacle.” Spectacles have degraded us into spectators no longer capable of reasons and emotions. While we are surrounded by us on all directions, we ostracize ourselves.
Meanwhile, apartments have become the very symbol of spectacles. Construction site floors are flooded with cryptic numbers, signs and codes. The fence screen that encircles the entire outer wall must be trying to hide what happens on the inside. Wires are so tangled that nobody could possibly guess where they are connected to; thin steel frames are connected by some means, and then get covered with thick cement. Yesterday’s floor becomes today’s ceiling, and bumps develop from smooth surfaces in a day. How does the world disturb us? The very process of spectacles are as much as spectacle as the outcomes themselves. I feel anxious and nauseated.
For I do not possess the level of intellect to give a logical account of my social standpoint, I wish to speak through photographs. Spectacles are not mere sets of images; rather, they are the social relationships among the people mediated by these images! Since our modern history was not built upon our willful choices, we have become secularized. For that, I give my best to be more meticulous.

# Scene 1) Panopticon: the ultimate surveillance system. Prisons regulate the behavior and freedoms of individuals through surveillance, in the name of punishing criminals. Surveillance is based on discipline. Discipline very efficiently controls a prisoner’s body and mind. Long narrow corridors, isolation from the outside, a spatial configuration suitable and efficient for group activities, a sense of arrangement regarding order and sequence, and traces of control disguised as warmth. Non-existent personal space. The various mechanisms of surveillance and confinement in prisons are best suited for subjugating the body and creating submissive habits. Habits that become an almost involuntary surveillance system, operating subconsciously, instinctively, to regulate their owners. This system is the most efficient and economical way to produce a submissive body and mind. That is why, in the film "The Shawshank Redemption", the old man Brooks was afraid of being released from prison and eventually committed suicide: the only escape from the psychological prison he had created. Another prisoner, Red, released on parole, shuddered at the habit of asking permission even for physical activities: he could not pass a single drop in a bathroom he freely visited.

# Scene 2) When the bell rings, students run down the long hallway and enter the classroom. They sit upright in their respective seats. They pull out their sociology textbooks, according to the timetable. While listening to the teacher's explanations, they take notes in neat writing, with their gaze alternating between textbook and notebook. When the recess bell rings, several groups gather in the hallway and talk. The bell rings again, and the teacher asks them to line up in the hallway to move to the computer lab. Boys and girls line up respectively in single file and walk alongside the wall to reach the lab. At the end of the day, the teacher tells them to wear gym clothes to school tomorrow for their physical education performance evaluation.

They resemble...
Classrooms packed into a long hallway. Instructions here and there all coercing order. Goal-oriented slogans on the stairs. Green plants trying to mask the bleakness. A wide playground surrounded by high walls. Crowds of bodies moving according to the ringing of a bell at an appointed time. Repetition of a dense timetable. The purpose is the same.
